Firing on Fort Sumter

My sisters and I came down to Rainbow Row to watch.  We so hope the southern troops are going to capture Fort Sumter. We didn't know what to expect.  Lots of friends were there. Everyone was dressed like they were going to a garden party. We cheered every time the cannons blasted!  It was very exciting.  I don't think the ladies realized this was the beginning of a war and not a show put on for their benefit. After all, some of our boys might be killed!

Cordially,
Miss Amanda Honeydew

  11. Looking over the ocean from the rooftop to the fort being blown up was like seeing a gigantic star falling from the sky and exploding. It was terrifying.

  20. It was so exciting to see Amanda at Charleston. But I was worried that the Confederate troops would lose the fight. So we people climbed up the stairs that led to the roofs of our houses. Because the cannons were right on the cotton plantations.

The wheels of the cannons were on the our land so the plantations were getting messed up. Our slaves had to run into our houses because the smoke came over to the plantations. We all just stared at the fort worrying that our brothers were going to die. How long will this dreadful battle last?
